Haiti Earthquake Emergency Satellite Internet

Haitian Installs Require the Installation Consumables Kit

Akron, Ohio – January 29, 2010 Since January 12th, Haiti has been flooded with first responders from countries around the world – but many VSAT Systems customers shared the Haitians’ experience of that early evening quake that shattered buildings, lives – and the communications infrastructure.

Also shattered is the hardware infrastructure. You just can’t get tools and fittings and cables, even those that were easily available before the quake. So as VSAT Systems customers have put in requests for new dishes to replace both those damaged in the earthquake, as well as to replace terrestrial communications capabilities until the landlines are fixed (and for backup thereafter – Haiti’s now “earthquake prone”), they also want all the ancillary equipment that they’d normally be able to get at the local hardware, or the Port-au-Prince communications wholesaler.

Haiti satellite Internet installation

“VSAT Systems has never been a consumables supplier,” said Jerry Piland, VSAT Systems’ R&D Systems Integrator. “But I must say, this is a one-stop kit. And it’s the top-of-the-line gear that we spec for our systems, to make sure the signal is always strong, and the initial connection lasts as long as possible.”

VSAT Systems’ Installation Coordinator, Rick Baggott, explains, “We insist on our customers using only quad shield, solid copper core RG6 coaxial cable. Quad shield has four layers of braided shielding versus the standard two, and the low resistance of solid copper core means higher bandwidth capacity with less noise loss than copper-clad steel. You can actually see the difference when the customer or installer calls in for connection. You use the best equipment, and all other things being normal, you’re up, you’re running, and you’re good to go.”

In addition to one hundred feet, dual run, of the quad shield, solid copper core RG6 coax cable, the Installation Consumables Kit includes twenty F-type connectors, a hundred zip ties, ten feet of grounding wire, a ground rod clamp, one ground block, and a tool kit that comes with a compression tool, wire cutters, and a wire stripper.

“It’s all there,” said Jerry. “The only things the installer or customer will have to get themselves are the steel pole sized to the dish, the concrete for the footer, the eight foot copper ground rod, and conduit for protecting the cable between the dish and the structure. Those things just don’t ship easily.”
