So you want to be a satellite ISP? Let’s look at what you have to spend to bring your first customer online.

Typical costs to enter the satellite Internet broadband market as a Tier 1 operator:

  • Tens (or hundreds) of thousands of dollars a month for the space segment on the ever shrinking capacities offered by the satellites.
  • Several hundred thousand dollars for the teleport infrastructure. Double that for redundancy.
  • A quarter of a million dollars for a proper Data Center.
  • Half a million dollars (or more) for a satellite hub.
  • Not to forget the maintenance costs associated with all this infrastructure.
  • Salaries for the engineering and networking personnel.

In total, there is a fixed cost of well in excess of a million dollars for the teleport and the NOC infrastructure and a monthly cost of at least a quarter of a million dollars to lease the space segment, manage and maintain the infrastructure. Not to forget the time required to build the infrastructure, train the team and get everything running smoothly.

Sounds like an impossible market to get into without considerable upfront investment? Wrong! If you have a decent understanding of the dynamics of the Satellite broadband or telecommunication markets and have the sales capabilities to address unmet needs of a familiar market, there is a solution. The VAR/VNO/Dealer programs offered by VSAT Systems offers an easier route to becoming a satellite Internet provider.
